Position Summary:

Performs tests and procedures to meet the needs of patients within the scope of practice for a Medical Laboratory Technician as ordered by the Medical Staff. Possess the ability to understand and react effectively to the unique need of all age groups from 0-100. Works under the supervision of Laboratory Director or Lead Technologist.

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class III

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors or Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology or equivalent with successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Technology course that includes work experience rotation through all departments of a clinical laboratory, or qualified as a Laboratory Technician according to the CLIA requirements.

Personal Job-related Skills: Has good hand-eye coordination that enables the ability to operate instruments encountered in a clinical laboratory and also perform manual testing.

Licensure, Registry or Certification: Certified or eligible for certification by a national recognized agency is preferred.

Experience:

  1. At least one-year work experience is preferred but not necessary.

  2. Graduate of approved program in Medical Laboratory Technology with clinical rotation in all departments of the laboratory successfully completed.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Standing and sitting for extended periods of time with a considerable amount of walking. Capable of lifting 50 pounds from floor level to waist height. Ability to respond to emergencies in a timely manner both physically and mentally.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills:

  • Performs venipunctures, finger sticks and earlobe punctures in order to obtain blood for testing as required for tests ordered and utilizing hospital safety and infection control policies and procedures.

  • Performs various chemical and biological tests on patient samples including operating all Chemistry, Hematology, and Coagulation instruments as well as the ability to perform manual testing such as cell differentials and urine microscopic examination.

  • Performs quality control testing along with all procedures.

  • Performs instrument preventive maintenance on daily, weekly, or monthly basis as stated in each individual operating manual and documents preventive maintenance in appropriate log books.

  • Performs proficiency testing (such as AAB Surveys) as directed and within the time frame allowed.

  • Prepare specimens for the transport to reference laboratory following protocol stated in the reference laboratory manual.

  • Assists Laboratory Director and/or Lead Technologist in other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records and other information. Posts test results on proper logs and keeps copies of patient results for future reference.

  • Keeps work area clean, sanitary and well stocked.

  • Completes assigned testing and procedures within a reasonable time frame and informs co-workers or Chief Tech of pending work at the end of a shift.

  • Responds to changes in work load as necessary and has the ability to organize work by priority in emergency situations.

  • Distributes reports in accordance with procedures.

  • Understands and has the ability to perform tasks as outlined in the department policy and procedure manuals.

  • Demonstrates broad knowledge of all areas of the laboratory and participates in continuing education programs.

  • Is aware of, understands, and practices Safety precautions as outlined in the Safety manual.

  • Able to recognize abnormal values and distinguish whether they are mechanical errors or of clinical significance and reports finding to Laboratory Director or to the physician.

  • Able to recognize a need for maintenance and carry out procedure.

  • Greets patients in a courteous manner; responds to patients with empathy and positive interpersonal skills.

  • Consistently works at establishing a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all members of the Laboratory department; knows all members by name and works well with supervisors and those in authority positions.

  • Assists others in the Laboratory as required.

  • Continually maintains a positive working rapport with administration, physicians, and laboratory staff.

  • Inspires confidence from patients and visitors by performing and communicating in a professional manner.

  • Respects the confidentiality of patient records by using complete discretion when discussing patient matters.

  • Provides direction or assistance to patients, families, and visitors in a courteous and positive manner.

  • Coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during the assigned shift.

  • Regularly demonstrates the ability to coordinate simultaneous tests with complete accuracy.

  • Adjust work schedule in response to stat orders, emergency situations, or fluctuations in patient workload.

  • Completes all assigned procedures during shift and regularly uses time between procedures to departmental advantage; assisting others, clerical duties; willing to adjust personal schedule in case of a real departmental need.

  • Allows time for cleaning, sanitizing and stocking work area.

  • Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.

  • Assumes personal responsibility for ongoing continuing education and professional development.

  • Reports to supervisor any suggestions for positive changes or recommendations within the departments policies and procedures.

  • Reports problems to supervisor promptly.

  • Takes on extra duties independently.

  • Does not abuse sick time; requests personal time off by giving proper notification.

  • Gives advance notice for absence or tardiness if at all possible.

  • Comes to work on time and does not miss work.

  • Observes the hospital dress code and wears identification badge.

  • Attends to personal and health affairs so as not to interfere with the work schedule.

  • Consistently demonstrates a concern for cleanliness of self and work area, and practices infection control for the protection of patient and self.

  • Consistently strives to be an effective and production member of the institution.

  • Participates in Quality Management activities.

  • Complies with body substance isolation protocol.

  • Other duties, as assigned by Supervisor.

Other Significant Requirements:

  • Maintain HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.

  • Have read, understand and signed off on all Laboratory Department compliance policies and procedures.

  • Have the ability to judge whether a situation requires priority.

  • Follow all policies and procedures set forth by North Runnels Hospital District.
